The Gianicolo (one of the hills of Rome) is not only famous for the cannon and the puppet theatre, but also and especially for the monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi.
The statue of “the hero of two worlds” dominates the central square in the highest point of the Gianicolo. The statue was placed in 1895. The official version tells that Garibaldi used to look towards the Vatican, and that in 1929 (after the Lateran) the statue was turned towards the Gianicolo by request of Vatican.
