Fontana del Tritone – Triton Fountain

Il Tritone che da il nome alla fontana è inginocchiato sulle valve di una enorme conchiglia sorretta da quattro delfini.
Il mostro marino ha la testa piegata all’indietro nello sforzo di soffiare nella grande buccina (conchiglia tortile) da cui fuoriesce l’acqua.

Tra le code dei delfini, sono visibili delle api, stemma di famiglia dei Barberini, e delle chiavi, stemma dei pontefici.

Un tempo la fontana era nota a i romani come la “fontana del Tritone sonante” a causa dell’acuto sibilo emesso dall’altissimo zampillo che usciva dalla conchiglia.

The Tritone that gives its name to the fountain is kneeling on the valves of a huge shell supported by four dolphins.
The sea monster head bent backwards in an effort to blow in great “buccina” (tortile seashell) from which the water comes out.

Between the dolphin tails are visible some bees, coat of arms of the Barberini family, and some keys, coat of arms of the Popes.

Once the fountain was known to the Romans as the “fountain of the sounding Triton”, due to the sharp hissing emitted from the most high gushing coming off the shell.
